Why Every Adult Should Keep a Card Stash (and What Belongs in It)

You know the moment.

You're scrolling through your phone, you see "happy birthday!" pop up on a friend's profile, and you think: oh no. They deserve more than a grocery-store card. You haven't planned a thing. Your last move is a hastily typed text message, which somehow feels worse than nothing at all.

We've all been there. And after enough times, you start to wonder if maybe there's a better way.

There is. It's called a card stash.

What's a card stash, exactly?

A card stash is just a ll collection of greeting cards you keep on hand for whenever life happens. Birthdays, baby news, sympathy moments, big career wins, congrats-on-the-house, you-got-this energy, just-because thinking-of-you notes. The kind of moments that show up unannounced and deserve more than a reaction emoji.

The idea isn't to plan every relationship's mile markers in advance. It's just to be ready when one sneaks up on you.

What belongs in a good stash

Every stash is personal, but here's a solid starting framework:

Birthday cards, 2 to 3. Mix it up. One sincere, one funny, maybe one wildly off-brand for the friend who'll appreciate the chaos.

A "just because" card or two. No occasion needed. These are for the random Tuesday when you think of someone and want them to know.

Congratulations cards, 1 to 2. New job. New baby. New house. New chapter. Whatever the win, having one of these on hand means you're never the friend who said "I meant to send something" three weeks later.

An emergency funny card. Optional but recommended. For the friend going through something hard who you know would rather laugh than be hugged.

Where to keep your stash

The trick is keeping it somewhere you'll actually remember it. A drawer in your kitchen. A box near where you keep your stamps. A basket by the front door. The exact location matters less than the fact that it's findable in the 60 seconds you have between remembering the birthday and the post office closing.

Bonus tip: keep a roll of stamps with your stash. Future you will thank past you.

On the actual cards themselves

A stash is only useful if the cards in it are ones you'd actually be proud to send. Stuffy poems and forced rhymes belong in the trash, not your kitchen drawer. Pick cards that sound like you. Cards with words you'd actually say. Cards that make you smile when you pull them out, because if they make you smile, they'll probably make the recipient smile too.
